New Netflix Reality Show Attempts To Manipulate People To Commit Murder

A new reality show coming to Netflix on February 27 explores the dark side of human psychology. According to CNET, Derren Brown: The Push I attempts to discover if the average person can be convinced to murder somebody.

The show is hosted by Derren Brown, who Esquire describes as a "psychological illusionist," and puts an unwitting participant into a situation where a group of strangers attempts to convince them to commit murder.

The show explores how the idea of how "obedience and social compliance" can be used to manipulate "even the most moral people" to do just about anything:

Brown exposes the psychological secrets of obedience and social compliance. He expertly lifts the lid on the terrifying truth that, when confronted with authority, our natural instinct is to unflinchingly obey without question—to such an extent that even the most moral people can be made to commit the most horrendous acts, simply because they are told to do so.

In the show, a group of 70 actors work together in an effort to convince a man, who was unaware he was being filmed, into pushing an elderly man off a building. Brown says the goal is to make him "need him to feel like there’s only one way out when he’s told" to kill the old man.

The show originally aired in the UK two years ago but is finally being made available worldwide on Netflix. Brown announced the premiere on Twitter and promised he has two shows coming out later this year on the streaming platform.
